Should
You Dump Your Old, Expensive Phone Service?
Hi, I’m Tom.
If you're like me, you're looking for ways to save money.
One of the ways I've found is to switch from my conventional
phone company to one of the new Internet phone services.
But to do this, you'll
need what's called a VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) phone.
So I created this page to advise you on what a VoIP phone is,
and why Linksys phones are some of the best best quality and most
reasonably priced VoIP phones you can get.

The
Linksys Phone - An Introduction
Linksys,
which was purchased by and is now a division of Cisco, is one of the
best known brands for high quality IP phones at reasonable
prices. Since being purchased by Cisco, the already high
level of quality that Linksys were known for has been raised even
higher to the widely known Cisco level standard of hardware quality.
|
|
|
IP phones from
Linksys are also well known for their compatibility with many service
providers, as well as most of the popular open communication
platforms. They are also compatible with the many of the most
widely used and popular VOIP business phone services. On top of
this, they are very easy to configure using any of the main web
browsers. With a Linksys phone you can make low-cost or
even free calls using Yahoo! Messager with Voice. For this,
you’ll want the Linksys iPhone Dual-Mode Cordless Phone for Yahoo!
Messager. It includes a charger, handset and USB Base Station
that plugs into your PC. This means you do not need to use a PC
microphone and headset – you can use the cordless phone. You can
either make calls using Yahoo! Messager on your PC, or use a regular
telephone line. It really is the best of both worlds.
There are three levels of Linksys IP phones, with increasing amounts of functionality.
Basic Level Linksys IP Phones
The
basic Linksys phones models are best used in common locations such as
warehouses, kitchens, and other areas that only require basic phone
functionality. They offer basic single or two line options, one
or two Ethernet ports and a basic LCD display screen. They
include the models SPA901, SPA921 and SPA 922.
Mid-level Linksys IP phones
The
mid-level Linksys phone models are ideal for managers, administrators,
sales professionals and other middle level professionals. In
addition, they are a perfect option for small offices and home
offices. They include models like the SPA941 and SPA 942. Upper-Level Executive grade Linksys IP phones
The
executive grade Linksys phone models are perfect for senior level
executives and others who are looking for a phone with an extensive
list of features, such as multiple lines, wireless connectivity,
Bluetooth, larger color screens and improved speakerphones.
Models in this range include the SPA962 and SPA525G, which carries the
Cisco name.
Regardless of which Linksys phone you choose, you
will be pleased with both the ease of use and the high quality of the
instrument. As with all Cisco products, you will be getting the
best electronic hardware available. .

Two
Excellent Linksys Phones
VOIP,
which stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol, phones (also known as IP
phones) are becoming more and more popular and more manufactures are
coming out with selections of VOIP phones. Two of the best IP
phones are from Linksys: the CIT400, and the WIP330.
|
|
|
THE Linksys CIT400 Phone
The CIT400 by Linksys lets you make both land line calls and Skype
calls without using a PC. Unlike most IP phones, with the
CIT400 you can make Skype calls without being connected to a PC,
because of the software embedded in the phone. This is a big
advantage over other Skype phones which require you to connected to
your PC with a headset and microphone.
This phone uses a base station with a wireless handset. Up to
four additional handsets can be added and they work up to 150 feet from
the base station. The handsets have a color display screen
and the base unit itself is relatively small and actually quite
attractive. Although almost everything is configurable from
the handset, the base unit can also be configured through
your PC if you prefer using a mouse.
The wireless handset is rated at 120 hours of standby time and 10 hours
of talk time, using the NiMH AA batteries.
One final large plus for the CIT 400 is that is allows you make calls
using your standard phone line, rather than your Internet
line. This can come in very handy if there is a power outage
or your Internet connection is down for any reason. All in
all, this is a great choice for an IP phone.
The Linksys WIP330
Wireless-G IP Phone
This IP phone from Linksys communicates over a high-speed Internet
connection, using a Wireless-G network. In addition to being
an excellent IP phone, it can also make video calls and surf the Web
using Internet Explorer.
The WIP330 provides more features than you ever thought a phone could
have. I includes all the advanced phone features you’re
familiar with, such as: speed dialing, peer to peer dialing, three way
conferencing, call waiting, call transfer, call forward, call hold and
resume, caller ID and call muting. But in addition is
includes even more advanced features such as video calls and Fast
Hotspot Authentication.
With its large and very sharp resolution color screen, you can surf the
internet just as fast and easy as you can on a smartphone (only with
far more features!). Excellent sound quality, 50 hours of
standby time and three hours of talk time round out the excellent
features.
Regardless of which Linksys phone you choose, you will be getting that
legendary Cisco hardware quality. That, along with
the easy, efficiency, and - most importantly - lower costs of an IP
phone, will provide you with a modern choice for phone service that
will serve you well for many years.

What
Exactly is VoiP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)?
In a nutshell, “Voice Over
Internet Protocol”, or VoIP for short, refers to technology that allows
you to make telephone calls over the Internet, or “IP Network” as it is
sometimes called. When you use a broadband Internet
connection, you can simply use a microphone and speakers, or a headset,
to talk just as you do with a traditional telephone.
|
|
|
In
a traditional phone system, analog audio signals are sent through fiber
optic telephone lines to the traditional telephone companies, where
they are converted into the voice that you hear. With a VoIP
phone system, analog signals get converted into digital packets, which
are then transmitted over the Internet and then distributed to a
telephone exchange for the completion of the call.
Actuallly, you already make calls on the IP network if you make
international calls, as they are frequently routed through the IP
infrastructure due to the lower cost.
VoIP phone services offer a tremendous range of digital features not
always available in conventional phone systems, such as: voice mail
caller ID, conference music while on hold, conference calling, call
filtering, and call blocking. Plus, you can receive
voicemails into an email inbox or web page.
You can also do seriously advanced things such as selecting multiple
new inbound area codes, which lets you create an assumed presence
showing a different city. You can also use this to provide a
local calling number for your family and friends. You can
even make video phone calls if your PC has a digital camera, as well as
use online chat while you’re talking on the phone.
VoIP service providers typically have lower monthly fees than
traditional phone companies, especially for long distance and
international calls. Plus, you have the ability to take your
phone number with you whenever you travel and have access to a high
speed Internet service.
In fact, many telephone companies and Internet service providers are
currently expanding to provide VoIP phone services. The most
well known of these is Skype, although Verizon and other large
conventional carriers are also getting on the VoIP bandwagon.
Today, there are many VoIP phone plans available that enable you to
make unlimited long distance calls as well as provide plans with very
inexpensive domestic and international calling rates. These
plans typically include many of the features that you pay extra for
with a traditional phone service, such as: call blocking, call waiting,
call forwarding, conference calls, and voice mail. This is
one more way a VoIP phone service can save you money.
With their growing popularity and acceptance, a VoIP telephone service
is definitely worth considering.

A Look at
VoIP Phones
Unlike the current craze with
“smart phones”, VoIP phones are not designed to look cool or
futuristic. Since they are designed specifically to same thing as your
traditional telepnone, only much cheaper and with far more features,
they are designed to look and feel like the old telephones we know and
love.

Another
name for phones that use VoIP technology, instead of a conventional
phone line, is “Ethernet hard phone”. Basically, an Ethernet
hard phone looks like a conventional telephone. However,
instead of having a normal phone jack, it has an Ethernet port
instead. The Ethernet port communicates with a VOIP server,
gateway, or another VOIP phone. Because this type of phone
uses its own VOIP server, it doesn’t need to be directly connected to a
PC in order to make calls.
This type of VoIP phone can be used so long as an Internet connection
is available. This is one reason why many businesses that
have reliable Internet connectivity have switched their office phones
over to VoIP phones. It saves money and is more efficient
because the number of phones is not limited by the number of available
phone lines.
When talking about residential VoIP, it refers not to the physical
phone but to the software program. At you residence, VoIP
software can be downloaded and used with a VoIP phone to make
calls. You can even use a regular phone if you purchase and
adapter to connect it to your PC. Or, you can buy a VoIP
phone. Another way to go is use a headset with a
microphone. You should note that making VoIP phone
calls using your computer requires you to talk to someone who also has
a VoIP system. That is, unless you have one of the newer
systems from companies such as Linksys, which have models that, using a
special base unit, allow you to make calls without being connected to
your computer.
Another option is to use a Wi-Fi phone, such as is used by
Vonage. These work the same way that a lap top works with a
wireless “hot spot”. They require a wireless Internet
connection in order to work. These are particularly useful in
that you can make phone calls while traveling, instead of using your
cell phone.
These are all good options for VoIP phones. Which is best for
you depends on if you are an individual or a business, how many
features you need, how much of your calling is long distance and
international, etc.
With
the growing number of choices now available, it’s important to do your
research and select the VoIP service best for you.
